I had an opportunity

today

to help someone

seeking another place

and we stood for a while as I explained the path

from where we were

to where she needed to be

I thought she hesitated

passed by

took courage and

called me back in the beginning

so

I stretched my face to smile

to be simple and present

the seconds ticked by gently

as it became clear that

we’d stumbled upon some blessing in the hurly burly

the here-ing and there-ing

and though we may never meet again

we travelers may long remember

the pathway to heaven

made of eyes and smiles
