Those who do
not want to honor
truly honor
Black History
Should not interrupt
those who are
living it
and looking
out of eyes of
endurance
all we can do
is live
what joy filled tears
we never shed
and tell the truth
with love
in the swimming pool
of God’s weary eye

We are told to rend
our hearts
not our outward draperies
the earth is rent
and rented
to us
for the
price of our care
and like any
other dispossession
the dispossessing
shall leave us
despairing
repenting
too late

And what if
our lives
are loaned to us
for some interwoven
pattern
purpose
and this brief handful of days
reminds
the soul
of duty
yet
unpaid

Once I read in a book that love is always always work and/or courage now many years later I know while useful for a season such a definition stumbles sputters long before the finish line for love is always always grace true love is unmerited unconditional grace elegant luminous grace while work and courage may get up early put on overalls dungarees and feed the flame the radiance that stifles…

Once I read
in a book
that love is always
always work and/or courage
now
many years later I know while
useful
for a season
such a definition
stumbles
sputters
long before
the finish line
for love is
always
always
grace
true love
is unmerited
unconditional
grace
elegant
luminous
grace
while work and courage
may get up early
put on overalls
dungarees
and
feed the
flame
the radiance that stifles
bitterness
aborning
is
only and always grace

So many things
we do this day
prepare the soil
for some distant harvest
the joy we find in
the anticipatory way
fixes in our blood and sinew
and deeper
patterns that
will live on
long after we are dust
the best of us
shall live
on
